DeKalb County Government Summer Offerings for Youth

Subject: Register Your Kids Today for the Virtual Village and Get Vaccinated!

Virtual Classes Summer Session Begins on June 1st and Ends July 30th

Over 15 free classes and activities available!
 
Class topics include dance, theater, film, foreign language, technology, and more. Classes are free to DeKalb County residents; however, class sizes are limited and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Virtual classes are taught by experts in their perspective fields. Darryl D. Lassiter, a writer and producer with over 25-years working in the TV and film industries, has teamed up with Dr. Amy Aidman, an expert in the area of children and media research and Senior Lecturer, Emerita at Emory University’s Department of Film and Media Studies, and others, to bring real life experiences of Georgia’s burgeoning film industry to the youth. Orrin "Checkmate" Hudson has spent the past 20 years teaching more than 75,000 young people they have the ability to succeed in life if they use their brains.

Be Someone Chess Class
Saturdays, 11:00am-Noon

During the one-hour session the instructor will teach children key messages such as “Pants Up, Heads Up, Grades Up, Never Give Up,” and “Make Every Move Your Best Move by Thinking Ahead.”




Project One80
Tuesdays, Noon-1:00pm

Project One80 is a team building work group which helps youth socialize, build, modify behavior and learn personal development through emotional exploration and positive peer mentoring.




 
The Power of Play
Tuesdays, 10:00-11:00am

CMA’s trained educators will introduce children to a wide variety of topics through story time, vocabulary games, and interactive, hands-on activities. Each participant will receive a materials care package (Museum in a Box) prior to the start of class.




Bob GlickSmith's Introduction to Digital Photography
Thursdays, 1:00-2:00pm

At the end of the course the student should be able to demonstrate proficiency in all areas of the digital photography arena. This includes the tools, the processes and the applications of digital photography.




Additional Youth Programming, Services and Resources

DeKalb County Parks, Pools, Arts Center To Reopen

DeKalb Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs is scheduled to reopen all facilities and amenities for public usage, DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond announced today.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines will be observed during nature programs and activities to ensure protocols are being practiced.

“I know everyone is eager to get back to participating in recreational activities, so we are thrilled to provide these services,” said DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond. “The parks department is looking forward to providing opportunities for the public to explore, engage and connect with our nationally accredited park system once again.”

Park users will be able to utilize athletic fields, sports facilities, playgrounds, picnic shelters and outdoor basketball courts beginning Friday, May 21.
The swim season will begin Saturday, June 12. All pools and splashpads will require patrons to preregister prior to entry.

DeKalb Summer Camp Registration Is Now Open

Camp Superstars will resume this summer starting Monday, June 14. The program is a summer day camp for ages 5-15, which runs from 7 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday through Friday at a charge of $66 per week. Breakfast and lunch are provided for campers.

The Porter Sanford III Performing Arts and Community Center will reopen Monday, June 14, at a reduced capacity in accordance to CDC guidelines for indoor events.

Youth Empowerment Services - Youth Leadership Program

Courses begin June 22nd

YES is a two-week virtual program that will engage participants in personal leadership development. This program will be interactive and reflective. It will include group discussions, activities, and the opportunity to analyze real life examples and case studies. Sessions will include effective communication, understanding leadership, time management, setting goals, public speaking, managing conflict, and more.
